Prince Charles attended the state opening of parliament on Tuesday on behalf of his mother, the Queen, and

 stepped out to deliver his speech in the Houses of Parliament, seated in the wife's seat next to the monarch's throne.

According to Express UK, the Prince of Wales signaled a new era in the monarchy from his ailing mother, with Charles saying he is approaching his future and eventual role as king.

In another royal ceremony at Tuesday's event, the Queen's grandson Prince William was also present at the event, 

which was seen by his father to read out a speech setting out the government's legislative agenda.
