The book, Queens of Mumbai, written by Hussain Zaidi, gives a glimpse into Gangubai's life.

The fearless lady is considered the matriarch of Kamathipura in Mumbai. 

Reportedly, she was a brothel owner, who also dealt in drugs and was involved in murders.

People called her the 'Madam of Kamathipura' because she had connections with underworld dons.

Gangubai was forced into prostitution by her boyfriend when she was very young. Reports suggest that her spouse sold her for Rs. 500

She had a soft spot for other women who were forced into prostitution and she often helped those in need.
