The Earth is heated by sunlight and some of the heat that is absorbed by the Earth is radiated back into space.

However, some of the glassy gases in the lower atmosphere allow incoming solar radiations (in the range 300 - 2500nm) but do not allow Earth to radiate heat back into space. .
